This Blackstone Philly Cheesesteak recipe is amazingly easy to prepare, but the taste is off-the-chart delicious! The beef’s flavor can shine, though, because of the light seasoning, the delicious melty provolone cheese, and the lightly toasted and buttered bun.

WHAT IS IN a Blackstone Philly cheesesteak?

Ingredients to make Blackstone Philly Cheesesteak.

With just a handful of ingredients, this recipe comes together quickly. You want to make sure that you shave your beef nice and thin. You can ask your butcher to shave the beef for you if you don’t have a meat slicer at home. (this is a super handy kitchen tool to have if you have the space to store it!)

INGREDIENTS

  • Butter – Use regular salted butter; it helps add flavor to your sandwiches.
  • Sub or hoagie buns – You want to use fresh buns for this recipe.
  • Canola oil – You can use any oil that has a high smoke point; avocado oil is a good substitute.
  • Large onion – You can use a regular yellow onion, a white onion, or a sweet onion. It’s your choice.
  • Shaved beef – I like to use ribeye for this recipe, but you can substitute top sirloin or any other good cut of beef. To ensure that it cooks quickly, make sure it is thinly shaved.
  • Garlic powder – You can substitute granulated garlic for the garlic powder.
  • Onion powder – Helps add a depth of flavor to the beef.
  • Kosher salt – I always like to add a little salt to everything I cook, and Kosher salt is my salt of choice when I’m cooking.
  • Fresh ground pepper – Fresh ground has much more flavor than the pre-ground pepper you buy.
  • Provolone cheese – This cheese melts nicely and is similar to mozzarella but has a more pronounced flavor.

Start by heating half your Blackstone grill to medium-high heat and turn the other side of the grill to low heat. You can melt the butter on the hot side of the grill and place the buns on top of the butter to toast. The other option is to butter the buns first, then place them on the grill to toast. Once they are nicely toasted, remove them from the grill and set aside.

Add the oil to the hot side of the grill, and then put the sliced onions over the oil. Cook the onions until they are caramelized, about 5 – 7 minutes.

Slide the caramelized onions to the cooler side of the grill. Make sure you stir them occasionally to prevent them from burning.

Add the shaved beef to the hot side of the grill and season it with garlic powder, onion powder, Kosher salt, and fresh ground pepper. Using your spatula, break apart the beef into bite-sized pieces. Cook until the beef has browned.

Next, add the sliced provolone cheese on top of the beef. Allow the cheese to melt on top of the beef.

You can either mix the meat, cheese, and onions together, divide it into 4 equal portions, and transfer it to each of the toasted buns. Or, if you prefer, you can simply divide the beef and cheese into 4 equal portions. Place 1/4 of the onions on each bun, then add the beef and cheese to each roll. Serve immediately.

I like to keep it simple, just serving these great sandwiches with a side of my favorite potato chips. But they also pair perfectly with fries, onion rings, or a nice green salad.

Pro Tips

  • You can ask your butcher to shave your beef, or you can do it yourself if you have a meat slicer. If you partially freeze the meat before slicing, it makes it easier to shave thinly.
  • You can use a griddle on your grill if you don’t have a Blackstone grill; it works just as well.
  • When cooking the beef, use a large flat-edged spatula so you can chop the beef into small bite-sized pieces.
