Ingredients in Cheese-Stuffed Burgers
All the usual ingredients for any gourmet burger, but the cheese really bumps this up to the next level!

For the Burger
- Cheddar cheese, shredded – You can use any cheddar, from mild to sharp, but sharp is going to give you more flavor.
- Mozzarella cheese, shredded – Use a firm mozzarella; I would not recommend fresh mozzarella for this recipe.
- Monterey Jack, shredded – Use your favorite Monterey Jack cheese; with jalapeno is a favorite of mine.
- Ground beef – You want to have good fat content in your beef; look for an 80/20 blend of beef to fat.
- Worcestershire sauce – Adds a little “umami” flavor to the burgers.
- Seasoning salt – Use your favorite store-bought seasoning salt or make this Montreal Steak Seasoning.
- Garlic powder – Adds great flavor; you can use garlic powder or granulated garlic.
- Fresh ground pepper – I always use fresh ground pepper when I can; the taste is noticeably better than pre-ground.
- Onion powder – Adds that hint of onion flavor to your burgers.
For serving
- Hamburger buns – Use a good-quality bun. I like brioche buns for their buttery taste.
- Lettuce – I like adding crispy lettuce to my burgers.
- Tomato, sliced – A slice of red ripe tomato adds color and flavor.
- Favorite condiments – Ketchup, relish, mayo, BBQ sauce, mustard, and pickles or onions.
How to make cheese-stuffed burgers

Preheat your grill to medium-high, aiming for a temperature of 400-425°F.
In a medium mixing bowl, combine all the shredded cheeses and mix gently.
In a separate large mixing bowl, combine the ground beef, Worcestershire sauce, seasoning salt, garlic powder, pepper, and onion powder. Mix everything using your hands until just combined. Be careful not to overmix the ground beef; it will change the texture of the burger.

Divide into 6 pieces and form into patties slightly larger than the buns you are using. Make 3 of the patties with a slight lip on the edges, while the other 3 are just flat patties.
Place about 6 tablespoons of the shredded cheese mixture onto each patty with a slight lip. Place the top patty on top of the cheese and gently seal the 2 patties together by pinching them together so there are no gaps.
Grilling your cheese-stuffed burgers

When you are ready to grill your burgers, turn one side of your preheated grill to low and place the patties on that side of the grill to cook. Close the lid and allow the burgers to cook for 6 – 8 minutes. Then flip them over and cook for an additional 6 – 8 minutes, or until the burgers have reached your desired doneness.
Remove the burgers from the grill and allow them to rest for 4 – 5 minutes before assembling your burgers. This is an important step you shouldn’t omit. It allows the cheese to cool slightly and the juices of the meat to be absorbed into the beef.
Plus, this is the perfect time to toast your burger buns on the grill.
Building your cheese-stuffed burgers

Once the burgers have rested for a few minutes, it’s time to assemble your burgers. Build your burger using your favorite condiments. For me, lettuce and sliced tomatoes make it on just about every burger I make, but you can totally make this your own.
You can add onions, pickles, or sliced peppers to your burgers. Use your imagination; any type of burger toppings you can imagine will pair beautifully with this amazing cheesy burger!
Tips and hints

- You can use any kind of cheese you prefer. It can also be all shredded or all sliced. I like using shredded cheese because you can mix it all together before assembling to make the cheeses all combined once melted.
- One tip for the cheese is that using freshly shredded cheese is better for melting than using pre-shredded cheese.
- The burger patties tend to shrink as they cook, so making your patties slightly larger than your bun will result in the patty being the same size as your bun after it’s cooked.
- If you use a thermometer to check for the doneness you’d like of your patties, make sure not to put the thermometer in the direct center of the patties, or you will be measuring the cheese temperature.
- You can make the patties ahead of time. Cover and refrigerate. Pull out of the fridge before preheating the grill, so you aren’t putting super cold patties straight onto the grill.
- Stuffed cooked patties don’t reheat as well because the cheese will ooze out when reheating. But I don’t think you will have any leftovers with this recipe!
