WHAT DO YOU NEED TO MAKE Mustard GRILLED Onions?
INGREDIENTS
- Large sweet onions
- Butter
- Dijon mustard
- Honey
- Worcestershire sauce
- Garlic powder
- Thyme
That’s all you need! Well, you are going to need a set of metal skewers. I prefer using the metal ones over bamboo, especially for this recipe.
How to make Mustard Grilled Onions
Preheat your grill to medium hot, about 350 -375 degrees F. Cut the ends off the onions and remove the outer layer and discard.
Slice each onion into 1/2 to 3/4 inch thick slices. Carefully insert a pair of metal skewers into each onion slice so that they are parallel to each other.
This will keep the onion slices intact when you have them on the grill. You can usually thread 2-3 slices of onion onto each pair of skewers. Of course, that will depend upon the size of your onions and the length of your skewers.
Place the skewered onions on a large baking sheet and set them aside. Then combine the melted butter, Dijon mustard, honey, Worcestershire sauce, garlic powder, and thyme in a bowl. And whisk so that the mixture is well blended.
Brush both sides of the onions with the mustard butter mixture. Now it’s time to get these babies on the grill!!
Grilling the mustard grilled onions
Place the onions on the preheated grill and cook for 15 -20 minutes. Turn the onions once after 7-10 minutes.
Brush the remaining mustard butter mixture on the onions after you have turned them. You are looking for nice char marks on both sides. The onions should also be nice and tender.
Serving your mustard grilled onions
As I mentioned earlier, these wonderfully flavorful mustard grilled onions work perfectly on top of your favorite grilled burger. They also pair nicely with any other grill or roasted proteins that you are serving.
For onion lovers, I like to serve the whole slice on top of a burger or steak. Alternatively, you can put the onions on a platter as a side dish and let everyone take as much as they like.
The sweet onion, when grilled, has natural sugars that come out, and the flavor is amazing. Make sure you use sweet onions or white onions; yellow onions or red onions will work. Although you will get a much different flavor from them.
That said, if you love caramelized onions try all the different varieties. They may work wonderfully with different dishes! As an onion lover, I love making onions in different ways!
I like to make sure and remove the onions from the skewers after grilling but before plating. Remember, the skewers being metal are hot, and you don’t want anyone to burn themselves reaching for an onion!
Don’t they look absolutely amazing? Time to get the skewers out and grill up some mustard grilled onions tonight!
