WHAT DO YOU NEED TO MAKE BBQ Thai Mussels?
Literally, you only need just a handful of ingredients. This recipe comes together very quickly. There is no fuss and no muss, just superlative-tasting Thai mussels!
INGREDIENTS
- Mussels, scrubbed and beards removed
- Lemon Juice
- Sugar
- Fresh coriander, chopped
- Fish sauce
- Garlic, minced
- Red Chili flakes
These mussels have an amazing Asian flair. They turn out a little tangy, a little garlicky, with just the right amount of spice. Unlike some other Thai recipes, they only require a few ingredients.
Making BBQ Thai mussels
Preheat your grill to medium hot, about 350 degrees F. While your grill is heating, you can prepare the sauce for the mussels.
In a small bowl, combine the lemon juice, sugar, coriander, fish sauce, garlic, and red chili flakes. Whisk the mixture well until the sugar is dissolved. Set aside for now.
Wash and scrub the mussels and remove any beards from them. Make sure you discard any mussels that are open and do not close or any with cracked or broken shells. If you tap an open mussel on the counter and it closes, it is good. If it doesn’t close, you need to discard it.
Once the grill is preheated, place the mussels directly on the grill and close the lid. Allow the mussels to cook for 4-5 minutes without opening the lid of the grill. Then check the mussels to see if they are open and done.
Don’t overcook the mussels!
If they are not quite done, you can cook them for another minute or two. You want the mussels to be open before you take them off the grill. A note of caution; be careful not to overcook the mussels. If you do, they will become dry and have a rubbery texture.
Once you remove the mussels from the grill, you may find that one or two still didn’t open. Be sure to discard these mussels as they are not good to eat.
Finishing the BBQ Thai Mussels
Now it’s time to finish your mussels and prepare to serve them! Transfer the cooked mussels to a large bowl and pour the prepared sauce over the mussels. Gentle stir everything together so that all the mussels are coated with the sauce.
You want to serve the mussels as soon as possible after you remove them from the grill. They should be nice and hot!
I like to always serve mussels with slices of toasted baguette. It’s the perfect bite with the mussels. In addition, the slices of toast are great to dip into the sauce, Yummy!
Buying fresh mussels
Although mussels are available all year round, you should still make sure you are getting them as fresh as possible. Ask your fishmonger or local fish shop when they get their mussels delivered. They likely get deliveries twice a week, so plan your seafood menu items around those days. This will help you to ensure that you are getting the freshest seafood that is available.
Just look at that amazing bite! The sauce, the spices! I know you just want to reach out and grab that tender little morsel! You need to get down to your local fish shop and pick up some mussels very soon!
